No referral is needed from outside agencies. However, if your child has been seen by any other professionals e.g. Paediatrician, Educational Psychologist it is always useful to have recent copies of reports.
Once your child has been assessed and seen for one block of therapy it will be possible for your therapist to give you a more informed answer. It depends on the child’s level and type of difficulty but also how quickly they respond to therapy. Often the best progress is made when families and /or school staff are able to follow the advice/therapy programme and continue to practise inbetween therapy sessions.
Speech and Language sessions can take place in school, nursery or at the clinic space in Sonning Common. Therapy will involve the parents, or professionals involved as much as possible for effective outcomes. Therapy delivered in school/nursery allows for close liaison with teaching staff and opportunities for further training. Similarly therapy with the family gives time for developing the caregiver’s skills and understanding of their child’s communication difficulty.
If your child has just been assessed and has a recent speech and language report (in the last 3 months) formal assessment will not be necessary. The therapist will need to have a session to meet and informally assess your child in order to plan therapy but this will be charged at the normal session rate.
We are already seeing an NHS therapist but would also like some additional therapy is this possible?
Yes it is possible, and following the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy guidelines every effort will be made to liaise with the NHS therapist so that therapy can be joined up and effective.
